The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is one of the great places to play golf in Myrtle Beach, located nearly in the middle of the 60-plus mile expanse of bright beaches and world-class golf. The second-oldest course in the area, The Dunes, which opened in 1948, was designed by famed architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Jones also designed such famous courses as Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta and Tanglewood Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and helped refine Augusta National Golf Club, site of The Masters, as well. It is a perennial member of numerous “top 100” course lists published by GOLF, Golfweek and Golf Digest magazines.

The Dunes is one of relatively few courses in the area not lined by houses. Some can be seen on the periphery of the property, but the effectively never come into play, lending guests who book their rounds through www.MyrtleBeachGolf.com and the club’s some 750 members a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The course sports smooth Bentgrass greens of medium size and undulation. The front nine weaves through forest before bursting into view of the ocean on the tee of the par-three 9th. The back nine, then, begins and lingers along attractive tidal marshes before turning back inland. The course’s signature stretch of holes is the 11th through 13th, culminating with the famous “Waterloo” hole, a mammoth par five that hugs Lake Singleton in the shape of a giant “C.” Players electing to drive close to the water’s edge will have an easier time carrying a corner of the lake in order to set up a short, uphill approach to the tiered, well-protected green. As with many holes at The Dunes, the fairway is narrow, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee.

Off-course, The Dunes boasts an incomparable set of facilities. Seeing as it is primarily a members club, the dining room, pro shop and practice facility—grass practice range, putting and chipping greens—are top-notch. Schedule a lesson or club fitting session with a member of the staff to round out the award-winning experience.
